The aim of this paper is to examine the forces that have, in recent years, shaped policies concerning the management of vicuna in Argentina. The main empahsis will be on the biological and socio-cultural factors. Special focus will be on the issue of the chocie between captive management and wild management and the conflicting perspectives and interests of the different parties at international, national and local level that influence the choice.
