Resumen:
: The use of alternative resources to substitute wood in the particleboard industry hasincreased in recent years mainly due to the depletion of forest resources. An ecological andeconomical attractive option is the use of by-products or waste from agro-industry. Rice husks(RH) and brewery spent grains (BSG) are interesting alternatives, since they are abundant, lowcost, compatible with the environment, recyclable and biodegradable, and can be reused togenerate higher value-added products in a circular economy context.Previous work has shown the feasibility of using rice husk combined with soy protein-basedadhesives (SP) to developed medium density eco-particleboards that met the US Standard ANSIA208.1-2009 for indoor applications. In this work we developed two novel and different eco-particleboards. We explored the use ofadhesives synthesized from citric acid (AC) and sucrose (S) in RH eco-particleboards and theproduction of binderless boards from BSG. In the case of BSG, due to the presence ofhemicellulose, cellulose, proteins, lignin, and residual sugars, together with the combined action ofpressure and high temperature, the self-adhesion of the BSG particles is promoted to form theboards. The results obtained were compared with previous RH-SP boards and with thespecifications for commercial chipboard defined by North American (ANSI. A208.1.-2009) andinternational (ISO 16893 (2016)) standards.
