A summary of the most relevant studies oriented to improve ourknowledge of the galactic structure is presented. In par- ticular, the worksreferring to the Third Galactic Quadrant (TGQ) are examined. Thecontroversial presence of a dwarf galaxy in Canis Major is outstanding among othercurrent issues here presented. It is also described the probable behaviourof the spiral structure and the shape of the Galactic plane in this region.The results of the different works that gave rise to each of theabove-mentioned issues are discussed. Special attention is paid to thestudy of the fundamental parameters of a set of open clusters in the TGQ.Such studies are complemented by recent results from neutral hydrogen andCO clouds in the same region.
