In this work, the incorporation of Cu2+ cations in the mesoporous network of a material MCM-41, by direct synthesis, was successfully obtained. Both direct synthesis at room temperature and direct hydrothermal synthesis were evaluated, varying besides the nature of the metal source. Several techniques such as XRD, DR-UVvis, H2-TPR and physisorption of N2 were used for the characterization of these materials. All the materials displayed a good structural order and specific surface area. Two copper species interacting with the matrix were detected: the Cu2+ species connected strongly to the framework and the Cu2+-O2--Cu2+ species which interacts weakly with the network. Moreover, the presence of small traces of extra framework CuO was detected in a few samples. The samples synthesized at room temperature and aged by 1 day, using cupric acetate as metal source, showed the optimum incorporation of cupper into framework, without the presence of extra framework CuO.
