Resumen:
A new Lower Cambrian unit, composed mainly of sulfate-carbonate evaporites and red, fine-grained terrigenous clastic rocks, located in the northern part of the Precordillera in La Rioja Province, is described and analized. Its general appearence is that of a diapiric evaporitic dome partially affected by halokinesis. Preliminary enviromental analysis suggests that the Totora Formation (nov form.) represents marginal marine enviroments, probably related to initial rifting stages of the basin.
