Resumen:
This paper describes exchange networks in which pastoralists from Sud Lípez (Department of Potosí, Bolivia) currently engage, emphasizing long-distance journeys with llama trains and their material expression.  On this basis, the principles that govern the location, content, and spatial organization of the drover's residential base, route, camps, ritual sites and exchange sites are discussed.  After considering the boundary conditions for projecting these observations, archaeological referents of various aspects of caravan trade are proposed.
