The current interest on the study of prehistoric warfare in archaeology is dominated by a positivist, utilitarian theoretical approach. In this introduction, we discuss the limitations of this paradigm and advocate, instead, the importance of the notions of practice and agency for the study of ancient, collectively organized violence. The second part of the chapter, summarizes the main contributions of each chapter.
