Resumen:
The International Union of Pure and Applied Physics (IUPAP) is the only global International Scientific Union dedicated to physics that connects physicists from all fields and all continents. Created in 1922 with 13 members, it now 60 country members from all over the world. The IUPAP is entering its second century of existence with a renovated mandate and widely discussed strategic plan. The celebrations for the centenary will highlight the Union?s new goals and the efforts it is making to increase diversity in the practice of physics, improve physics education and promote physics as an essential tool for development and sustainability. In this talk I will briefly describe the IUPAP, its actions, past achievements and future plans. I will also describe the activities we plan to pursue during this year of celebrations which will be combined with those of the International Year of Basic Sciences for Sustainable Development that has recently been approved by the UN General Assembly.
