Criterio demarcatorio del métier antropológico, la presencia del analista en “el campo” o la reunión del investigador teórico y del investigador empírico en una misma persona, caracterizan a todas las Ciencias Antropológicas. Este artículo examina, por un lado, la trayectoria centenaria de las concepciones y las prácticas con que arqueólogos y antropólogos sociales vienen produciendo conocimiento sobre la realidad empírica pretérita y actual de la Argentina, desde la institucionalización de las subdisciplinas antropológicas a fines del siglo XIX. Por otro lado,  se analiza cómo los antropólogos mismos fueron definiendo sus especialidades, convirtiendo al trabajo de campo en su marca distintiva, mientras operaban en un escenario atravesado por la antinomia y la persecución política e intelectual.    As a central feature of the anthropological métier, the presence of the analyst in “the field” or the fusion of the theoretical and the empirical researcher in one single being, define every anthropological branch. This paper examines, on the one hand, the centennial route of notions and practices through which both archaeologists and social anthropologists have investigated the Argentine past and present, since anthropology started to institutionalize at the end of the nineteenth century. On the other hand, it analyzes how the very anthropologists have defined their own expertise, turning fieldwork into their hallmark despite their acting on a stage run by political and intellectual antagonism and persecution.
