Fish Barcode of Life in Argentina

Argentina has an area of c.a. 2,8 M km2 and the largest continental shelf in the world,with nearly one million km 2. The sh fauna, both freshwater and marine, comprises about1000 species. In addition, about 150 species occur in the Argentine Antarctic Peninsula.Since 2006 the active participation of Argentina in the Global Fishbol campaign began. Sev-eral Research cruises have been carried out, building a large sh collection throughout theArgentine Sea including coastal waters, the continental shelf and slope. Between 2011 and2014 Antarctic cruises have been added and since 2010 we began sampling in inland watersperforming 18 eldwork trips in 160 dierent sites.So far, the sh and tissue collection comprise almost 5000 specimens and about 520 species,representing c.a. 47% of the sh species reported for Argentina.Extraction and amplication were performed in two International Barcode of Life refer-ence Laboratories in Argentina. Sequencing was performed in Advanced Analysis Center´sGenomics Facility and in the Canadian Centre for DNA Barcoding (University of Guelph,Ontario, Canada). The Barcode Index Number (BIN) was used to estimate the number ofspecies directly from the barcode records and congruence of these estimates with the distancebased and character based approaches were evaluated.The barcodes generated were used to increase the BOLD reference library and to test theimmensely valuable tool of Barcoding for specic discrimination Argentinean sh. As a re-sult several publications including description of new species and global studies of Barcodingapplication to marine and freshwater shes have been produced.
