Residual properties of concrete exposed to high temperatures

Like other materials, when concrete is exposed to high temperature, the different dilatation coefficients of the composite's phases and the changes of the water content of the cement paste produce the appearance of cracks. This paper shows the salient conclusions of a research program on the residual behaviour of concrete exposed to high temperature. The stress-strain behaviour under compressive and tensile loading is discussed. The suitability of the use of ultrasonic velocity to evaluate damaged structures and the effect of high temperature on bond resistance are also reported.
