Resumen:
This paper compares the behavior of concrete strongly affected by alkali-silica reaction (ASR) under long-term compressive loads versus a reference concrete. Cylinders were stored in saturated conditions at temperatures of 21 and 38 °C (70 and 100 °F). Concrete strains were periodically measured on a set of specimens loaded up to 40% of their compressive strength and on another set that remained unloaded. The evolution of expansions of concrete prisms stored in the same conditions as the cylinders, and in compliance with ASTM C1293, was also measured. The results showed that there were no significant differences in deformations under loads over time between sound specimens and those damaged by ASR; nevertheless, ASR crack development changed when the concrete was under sustained loads. As a consequence, the residual mechanical properties were modified.
