This work presents the effects of pigments on fresh properties and surface characteristics of a coloured self-compacting concrete (C-SCC). A mortar-based mixture design is applied and cases of mortar and concrete mixtures incorporating different types and dosages of pigments (iron oxides yellow, red and black, and black carbon) are included. Surface color was characterized on mortar and SCC specimens thorough measures of tristimulus L*, a* and b*, represented in the chromatic space CIElab. In addition, surface finish examples from  mortar and SCC specimens cast on mould made of different types of materials, are presented.
