The Cu prospects of the Dorsal de Huincul (DH) are hosted in the sedimentary rocks of the Neuquén Group (Cenomanian-Campanian) and located in the proximity of hydrocarbon fields (38° 27´- 39° 15´ S and 68° 46´- 69° 36´O). The mineralization consists of chalcocite and supergene Cu- bearing carbonates, silicates, chloride, sulfate, and oxides always associated with bitumen. This association suggests that Cu sulfides precipitated in the interface fluids/ hydrocarbons. The hydrocarbons migrations from the sources rocks upwards to the reservoirs through faults and most permeable strata’s of the DH was followed by a chlorine-rich brines that could have stripped Cu from the thick red bed sequence and S from the evaporites within the basin. The regional leaching in the host sandstones, suggests a huge volume of brines and hydrocarbons circulation through the Cretaceous strata’s that could have precipitated considerable amounts of Cu sulfides.
