La Santa Muerte is the fastest growing folk devotion in Mexico -and is rapidly spreading tothe USA. Despite its fearsome image, and bad press, it is only another (very) powerfulfigure to which Mexicans pray to deliver them from everyday hazards and untimely death.In that sense, it is quite similar to the socially respectable worship of the Virgin ofGuadalupe, the national patron, or of St Jude (patron of impossible causes) -the two mostwidespread devotions recognized by the Church.
