Abstract. A physical experiment is used to infer the constitutive parameters of the materialof a ball by means of the Bayes theorem. A ball made of a viscoelastic material is droppedfrom a certain height with a certain angle in a physical experiment. After the collisionwith a rigid surface, it bounces o with another angle. The trajectory of the bouncing ball is recorded with a high-speed camera and the dynamics is reconstructed with a computer algorithm. The experiment is repeated several times to obtain statistical data. On the other hand, a model of a viscoelastic material with finite deformation and rotation is analyzed within the continuum mechanics and discretized with the finite element method. The Bayesian inference is employed to identify these constitutive parameters through probability distribution functions (PDFs). After solving the stochastic model, the parameter estimation is carried out to obtain the PDFs of the modulus of elasticity, the friction coeficient andthe viscous modulus.
