Resumen:
Introduction: Body fat distribution pattern is gender specific: android (abdominal region) and gynoid (femoral-gluteal regions). DXA allows estimating total body and sub-region (gynoid and android) fat rapidly and precisely. Objective: To establish reference values of total, android, and gynoid fat mass for healthy women from Buenos Aires. Material and Methods: 96 women were studied. Exclusion criteria: body mass index (BMI) < 18.5 and>24.9 kg/m2, use of hormonal contraception, hormone replacement therapy, and medication affecting accumulation of fat tissue, participation in weight-loss programs. DXA (Lunar-Prodigy; V 8.1) was performed to determine: total (TF), gynoid (GF) and android (AF) fat and android/gynoid fat ratio (A/G). Results: The population sample was divided according to decade of life (D). Results are shown in the table (X±DS). D n Age(years) BMI(kg/m2) TF(kg.) TF(%) AF(kg.) AF(%) GF(kg.) GF(%) A/G 20-29 10 24±3 22±1 18±7 30±7 1.1±6 31±11 4.0±1 42 ±6 0.71 30-39 10 36±2 22±2 23±8 33±4 1.4±4 36±7 4.5±1 42 ±6 0.81 40-49 14 44±2 22±1 19±4 32±6 1.3±4 35±9 4.1±7 43±4 0.80 50-59 19 53±3 22±2 21±7 33±5 1.5±4 36±8 4.1±7 44±4 0.81 60-69 25 64±3 23±2 20±3 35±5 1.6±5 38±8 3.9±5 44±4 0.85 70-79 18 77±.1 23±119±7 31±4 1.3±1 30±10 3.6±1 39±5 0.75 TF % increased in the 7th vs. 3rd decades (p<0.03). AF (Kg) tended to increase between the 6th and 7th decades (ns) and decreased (Kg, %) in the 8th vs. 6th and 7Thdecades (p<0.02). GF % decreased in the 8th vs. 4th ,5th,6th and 7th decades (p<0.04 a 0.004). Conclusions: In view of the increasing clinical interest in studying and estimating total body and sub-region fat mass by DXA, reference values for healthy women are essential to adequately interpret and assess results.
