Resumen:
Body fat d istribution is gender specific: men tend to accumul ate adip ose tissue in the andro id region, wherea s women tend to do so in the gynoid region. The aim of the study was to asse ss tot al fat mass (TF M), andro id fat (AF), and gyno id fat (GF) mass in a selected group of healthy adult women with normal body mass index (BMI ) to evaluate variations in fat distribution. Seventy-seven women (20 e 69 yr of age) with BMI values betwee n 18. 5 and 24.9 kg/m 2 were included . TMF, AF, GF, and the AF to GF ratio (A:G) were assessed using du al-energy X-ray absorp tiometry. Results showed an increase in AF after the fifth d ecade of life (D), which reac hed statistica l significa nce in the sixth and seventh decad es ( p ! 0.05 e 0.008), a 33% increas e in k g of AF betwee n the fourth and seventh and a 20% increase in A:G between the third and the seventh, with n o significa nt change s in TFM and GF. In n ormal BMI wom en, age appears to be assoc iated with changes in fat mass distribution with an increas e in AF, which might have po tential delete rious heal th consequenc es, after the fifth D.
