THz GENERATION AND APPLICATIONS THz spectroscopy, employed to obtain the spectrum of a material, yielding information on the chemical constituents or structural nature of the material. The unique spectral characteristics of Terahertz spectroscopy have been used to investigate various pharmaceutical applications – notably the characterization of polymorphic forms of drugs. THz spectroscopy provides new data which adds to that obtained by Raman spectroscopy. Terahertz spectroscopy provides information on both high-frequency (just below IR) and low-frequency vibrational modes; the latter are difficult to assess with Raman as a result of proximity to the visible excitation line. As most plastic and polyethylene packaging is transparent in the Terahertz range, direct inspection of packaged materials should be possible.
