Background. Aortic wall function plays an important role on left ventricular performance. Intra-aortic balloon pumping (IABP) could modify the arterial biomechanics; however its effects on arterial wall visco-elastic properties have not been explored. Purpose. Our aim was to characterize the effects of IABP on the aortic dynamics. Methods. IABP was performed in six anesthetized sheep in which aortic pressure (P, Millar microtip catheter) and diameter (D, Sonomicrometry) signals were measured to be used in off line calculi. Results. Systolic, diastolic and mean aortic wall stress in unassisted cycles during IABP were always significantly decreased respect to control values (p
