Plastid morphology and SEM observations of the morphology of the striae, raphe, valvocopula and copula of Achnanthes speciosa Hustedt revealed important differences from all other achnanthoid genera; enough to propose the creation of a new genus: Haloroundia Díaz & Maidana.
