Resumen:
It was postulated that a mixture of Galacto-oligosaccharides (GOS) and Fructooligosaccharides (FOS) (®) added to commercial infant formula could improve mineral bioavailability and bone health, by promoting an intestinal microbiota similar to that prevalent in breast-fed infants which enhances mineral absorption. The changes on pH, absorption and bioavailability of calcium (Ca), magnesium (Mg) and phosphorus (P) in normal growing rats was evaluated by adding GOS/FOS® to isocaloric diets containing low or normal levels of Ca. From weaning to 40 days of age, male Wistar rats were assigned (n=10 per group) to received one of the four experimental diets: AIN´93-G rodent diet (A.5), AIN´93-G containing Ca 0.3% (A.3); A.5 and A.3 containing 5.3% of GOS/FOS® (GF.5 and GF.3, respectively). Dietary consumption was evaluated three times per week. Body weight (BW) was recorded weekly. Ca, Mg and P absorption were determined during the last 3 days of the experience. At the end of the study (t=f), caecal pH, total skeleton bone mineral content (teBMC) and Ca, Mg and P content of the tibia were evaluated. Results at t=f were (mean±SD) Diet Absorption (mg/100gBW/d) Femur content (mg/100g femur) Ca Mg P Ca Mg P A.3 26.4± 3.5 3.2± 0.4 24.8± 2.3 10.24± 0.26 0.549± 0,032 0.032 6.09 ±0.25 A.5 49.5± 1.9 3.9± 0.3 30.4± 2.3 11.7 ±0.49 1.031 ±0.039 7.0 ± 0.3 GF.3 31.0± 3.4 4.7± 0.5 30.9± 2.7 13.38 ±0.31 1.036 ±0.047 7.41 ±0.31 GF.5 58.4± 4.0 5.3± 0.5 34.3± 4.3 14.78 ±0.58 1.049 ±0.053 8.32 ±0.34 *p
