Quasi-elastic neutron scattering is a very useful experimental tool in many areas of condensed matter physics. The neutron scattering cross section for a given system can be predicted from a calculation of the dynamic structure factor (DSF). We use a Fokker-Planck approach to evaluate the DSF for particles subject to anharmonic potentials and weak frictional forces. The DSF has been calculated analytically for a particular weakly anharmonic potential and the results are being used to test a computer algorithm developed to calculate the DSF for potentials not amenable to a completely analytical treatment.
