While its proliferation is encouraged and indeed nurtured in several places, in other “wakame” is seen as a terrible nuisance species, a threat to the health and therefore the focus of containment and eradication efforts. U. pinnatifida is widely distributed in Europe, Asia, Mexico, Australia and New Zealand. In December 1992, was detected close to the international dock of Puerto Madryn, central Patagonia, Argentina. Collections of Laminariocolax aecidioides growing in sporophytes of Undaria pinnatifida were made during June and December 2004 in the low intertidal and tide-pools at Puerto Madryn. Cultures were iniciated by incoculating portions of the infected fronds of U. pinnatifida. The cultures were maintained at 21 ± 1 ºC with light regime of 12:12 h LD, photon flux density of 15 µmol m-2 s-1. In nature, L. aecidioides, presented a vegetative uniseriate irregularly branched filamentous. Its, was observed as dark formed by confluent points of 1 -2 mm diameter that covered fronds and sporophytes partially. L. aecidioides is described from laboratory cultures of the Patagonian populations. Isolates made from the interior of infected hosts developed into filamentous branched microscopic thalli. They were sporophytes and reproduced by both unispores and plurispores from unilocular and plurilocular sporangia. From unispore, gametophytic thalli were development. They produced small isogametes in terminal and intercalary uniloculars sporangia. L. aecidoides presented a cycle life constituted by two microscopic generations and isogamy. The sporophytic diploid phase presented 16 chromosomes and gametophytic haploid phase 8 chromosomes.
