Resumen:
As most Pelecypods, Argentinian mussel Mytilus platensis presents a free larval stage. studies were carried out on the characteristics of the larvae, starting from the controlled fecundation of ovocytes in laboratory and through analysis of larval shell structure of recruits recently fixed on the bottom.Recruitment depends on many factors. Some of them are nonfavorauble current transport of larvae; the predation of some planctonic and nectonic organisms and that of benthic animals when the larva reaches the bottom. The colonization of M. platensis is frequently, such as Hidrozoans and colonial Tunicates. The recruitment on "adult" bank of mussels is seriously affected by predetaion of a series of the benthic organisms, specially sea urchins, gastropodes, chitons and sea stars.
