Resumen:
The gametes of many groups of anthozoanscontain a funnel-shaped cluster of specialized cells thatfacilitate the transport of nutritive substances, known as thetrophonema. This structure has been found within all ordersof anthozoans, with the exception of pennatulaceans, scleractinians, and antipatharians, the latter of which arecommonly known as black corals. Based on the histologicalstudy of eight specimens of the black coral Dendrobathypathesgrandis Opresko (Zool Med Leiden76(22):411?442, 2002) from the southwestern Atlantic, wereport for the first time the presence of a trophonema withinthe order Antipatharia. A trophonema was found only inoocytes from one of the seven female specimens studied.Since D. grandis contains the largest oocytes amongantipatharians that have been studied to date, it remainsunknown whether the presence of a trophonema is anexceptional case, or whether these structures have simplybeen overlooked in other black corals.
