The objective is to generate a database based on one or two vegetation indexes (NDVI and/or fPAR measurements), for a continuous period of at least 30 years (1980-2010) in order to be used as a proxy for the estimation of livestock pasture productivity. Two sources of remote sensing data will be used: LTDR product (from NOAA satellite, 1981-1999, resolution 5 x 5km) and MODIS product (ACQUA/TERRA satellite, 2000-present, resolution 0,25 x 0,25 km). Using an intercalibration between both sensors, the database will include a 30 year collection, allowing a monthly characterization at the landscape scale, of the anomalies of forage production in a historical context. The information derived from the database will be applied in an index-based insurance to cover livestock farmers.
