Resumen:
Topography, soil and climate of the flooding Pampa, in eastern Argentina, determine the occurrence of floods of variable intensity and frequency. Ground water level is one of the factors responsible for foods. The objectives of this paper are: 1)to describe the groundwater dynamics as related to flood occurrence and 2)to analyse the factors responsible for their dynamics in the central part of the flooding Pampa. Results showed that groundwater level had a seasonal behaviour with maxima in September-October (late winter and early spring). On the contrary, extraordinarlly high values did not occur during a specific time of the year. The length of periods during which the groundwater level exceed the treshold, representing floods in low topographic positions, had a geometric distribution. Long periods of flooding occurred with low frequency while short ones took place throughout most of the year. Monthly avergae groundwater level fluctuation cannot be explained by rainfall. The budget of input and output of water from the system and the level of groundwater during the previos year were the principal determinants of the maximum yearly level of the aquifer.
