Revising the philosophy of mathematics underlying mathematical economics

In the paper, I will first sketchy introduce the main philosophical conceptions of mathematics. Second, I will try to determine which philosophical conception of mathematics fits better in empirical sciences, both natural and social. The result will be that none of the positions predominant in the twentieth century is apt for empirical sciences, but that one ancient and recently timidly reappearing position is the adequate. Third, I will present which conceptions has in fact prevailed in economics. Finally, I will conclude. Economics needs a mathematics differently grounded and new mathematical devices adapted to the characteristics of economic reality.
