Using a simple game-theoretical model of contests, we comparethe eort exerted by rugby teams under three dierent point systemsused in tournaments around the world. The scoring systems underconsideration are NB, +4 and 3+. We state models of the gamesunder the three point systems, both static and dynamic. In all thosemodels we nd that the 3+ system ranks rst, +4 second and NBthird. We run empirical analyses using data from matches under thethree scoring systems. The results of those statistical analyses conrmour theoretical conclusions.
