Topics of these lectures: 1- Schwinger's proper time approach to the effective Lagrangian for the electromagnetic field. 2- The Zeta-function approach to the derivation of the Euclidean effective Lagrangian. 3- Renormalization and 1-loop beta-function.  4- Continuation to Minkowski space and pair production. 5- Weak-field asymptotic expansion of the effective Lagrangian. The Heisenberg - Euler Lagrangian. 6- Strong-field asymptotic expansion. 7- Polarization phenomena in electromagnetic backgrounds: Birrefringence.
