Resumen:
PVC is well known as a highly versatile polymer with an excellent balance of properties and numerous applications in several sectors. The modification procedure can be achieved by means of various chemical or physical processes. Physical processes include plasma-ion beam treatment, electric discharge and flame treatment. On the other hand, using chemical treatments it is possible to carry out a series of well known and controlled organic reaction. PVC can be chemically modified by nucleophilic substitution reaction of chlorine atoms using many different nucleophiles. The modification reactions are extremely selective with respect to aromatic mercapto group, and the copolymers formed are neither crosslinked nor polluted by any other kind of side products. In the present contribution we describe the synthesis and characterization of PVC modified with fluorine containing compounds. The interest in these modifiers is manifold. On the one hand, the use of p-fluorothiophenol and its homologous (chlorine and bromine) permit the preparation of model compounds interesting for the study of different aspects of basic research. More specifically, fluorine containing polymeric compounds are of practical interest due to their thermal and chemical resistance and very low adhesion properties. Another important compound used here for modification of PVC is pentachlorothiophenol that is known to be an extremely efficient pesticide and fungicide that is used as an additive for soft PVC used in applications of bathroom curtains etc. bromine) permit the preparation of model compounds interesting for the study of different aspects of basic research.
