Abstract The electrochemical methodology is benign for the environment and exceptionally adapted to the preventive environmental protection. Its employment decreases or avoids the formation of toxic remainders and cuts back in the use of resources. Great advances in the development of sustainable electroorganic systems are expected. More effort should be dedicated to communicate the characteristics of sustainable chemistry to the decision level of industry and government as well as at all levels of chemical education, with the aim of consistently considering the incorporation of sustainable chemical processes, including synthetic organic electrochemical processes, to industrial production methods, and to promote the academic research on sustainable chemistry.
