Resumen:
Duplex coatings techniques (DCT) onto Stainless steel AISI 310 were prepared
by a double process consisting ofa n ion-nitriding treatment produced by Nitrogen/
Hydrogen plasma and a coating of ZrO2 -3 mole % Y2O3 growing by Chemical
Solution Deposition. This paper invesFig.tigates the phenomena ofin terdiffusion
betweenl elements and the formed phases. The zirconia coating process of nitrided
steel initiated a strong diffusion process. Two intermediate layers formed: the outer
mixing Fe and zirconia films elements and the inner ofhe matite. Unexpected results
are obtained by a subsequent nitriding. When the order ofp rocessing steps
is reversed, it produces a wholly limited interdiffusion ofelem ents. Nitrogen is incorporated
into zirconia structure forming substitutional solid solution and avoids
Nitrogen diffusion into the metallic substrate. Hydrogen, one component ofth e gas
mixture, diffuses easily throughout the coating and it acts as reducing agent. The
layer ofZ irconia are working like sieve, retaining Nitrogen and allowing the passage
ofHy drogen.ZrO2 -3 mole % Y2O3 growing by Chemical
