AbstractLas Lajas stream basin (Córdoba, Argentina) has several environmental problems, somerelated to water resources. The aim of this work was to carry out the geochemicalcharacterization of surface and groundwater, including an isotopic preliminary assessmentfor the hydrogeological interpretation, for resource management decisions. A conventionalhydrogeological study was performed whereas profuse background geological informationwas available. The stream, the unconfined aquifer and a confined layer were sampled. Thegeological-geomorphological, hydraulic, geochemical and isotopic aspects allowed establishing general relations between them. In the piedmont, the unconfined aquifer iscalcium-sodium bicarbonate-type with low dissolved salts values, due to the recharge fromthe losing stream and rainwater and to speedy groundwater flow. Towards lower basin, dueto the loess dominance, the dissolved salt values increase and the geochemicalcharacteristics change. The hydraulic relationship between the piedmont unconfined aquiferand the confined layer was confirmed by their common isotopic signature.
