Resumen:
In Antofagasta de la Sierra (southern Puna of Argentina), between ca. 10000-5000 years BP, the economy of human groups was oriented to the huntingand gathering of wild plants and animals. These societies generated significantchanges, most notably the adoption of camelid herding and agriculture fromca. 5000/4500 years BP onwards, which probably resulted from an earliercamelid domestication process. The incorporation of this productive optioninto the lifestyle of these groups carried significant changes in their economyand diet, as well as profound changes in social organization and symbolism. These changes were reflected in new patterns of mobility and use of space aswell as changes in technology, patterns of social and political relationships,mythical/symbolic cosmovision, and even biological effects on reproduction andhuman metabolism. These processes, which developed alongside a changingenvironmental framework that influenced the supply and availability ofsubsistence resources for humans, led to a new kind of society generally knownas Formative. This paper summarizes the investigations focused on Formativecommunities/groups that since 1983 have been carried out in this hithertounderstudied region, exposing the questions that have led the study of thiscomplex regional process and the progress made so far.
