Análisis de la distribución histórica y actual del Cardenal Amarillo (Gubernatrix cristata) en Argentina.

El Cardenal Amarillo (Gubernatrix cristata) se distribuye en Brasil, Uruguay y Argentina en ambientes de bosque de espino y sabana. Históricamente la mayor distribución ha sido en Argentina en la ecorregión del Espinal y la transición de éste con la ecorregión del Monte y el Chaco. En las últimas décadas las poblaciones se han reducido drásticamente debido a la pérdida y modificación de su hábitat por expansión de la frontera agrícolay a la intensa presión de captura para el mercado ilegal como ave de jaula, por lo que es considerada como globalmente en peligro de extinción por el UICN desde el año 1994. El objetivo de éste trabajo fue contrastar la distribución histórica y actual de G. cristata con registros desde el año 1826 hasta la actualidad. Se utilizaron 506 datos de registros históricos y actuales provenientes de revisión de bibliografía, colecciones de museos, páginas web, comunicación personal de colegas y observaciones personales de los autores. Para la confección de los mapas se utilizó el programa QGis 2.16. El análisis evidenció una marcada reducción de la distribución original hacia áreas donde aún se encuentran bosques de Espinal en buen estado de conservación. Estos resultados aportan información sobre la distribución actual de la especie, que puede servir para desarrollar planes de manejo y protección del hábitat de G. cristata los cuáles son muy necesarios para complementar programas activos para su conservación en Argentina.The Yellow Cardinal (Gubernatrix cristata) is found in Brazil, Uruguay and Argentina in thorn forest habitats and savannas. Historically the major part of the distribution of the Yellow Cardinal was in Argentina in the Espinal ecoregion and its transition zones with the Monte and Chaco ecoregions. In recent decades its populations have declined precipitously because of habitat loss resulting from expansion of the agricultural frontier and the intensive pressure of capturing of the species for the cage bird market, resulting in its inclusion on the IUCN Red List as globally Endangered in 1994. Our objective was to contrast the historical and current distribution of the Yellow Cardinal with records starting from 1826 until present. We used 506 historical and current records from a revision of bibliography, museum specimens, internet resources, personal communications and our own fieldwork. Maps were generated with QGis 2.16 software. We found a marked reduction from the original distribution to areas where well-preserved areas of thorn forest remain. With this assessment we contribute information about the current distribution of the species, which can be used to develop management and conservation plans for the habitat of the Yellow Cardinal which are urgently needed to complement actions for its conservation in Argentina.
