Descripción:
Water primrose, Ludwigia grandiflora subsp. hexapetala, constitutes a serious threat to thestability of water body ecosystems in USA and Europe. It is an aggressive invader thatreproduces by seeds and vegetatively. Attempts at chemical and/or mechanical control did notgive long term results. For several years natural enemies have been studied in Argentina to selectappropriate biocontrol agents (See previous Ann. Reports). The main promising candidate understudy is a new species of thrips, Liothrips ludwigi, which in no-choice feeding tests showedfidelity to L. g. hexapetala and L. peploides. In a damage test, 8 nymphs significantly affectedthe stem length, number of leaves, apical bud damage and number of secondary branchesproduced. However, they did not affect the dry biomass, stem diameter, leaves´ shape and thegeneral condition of the plants. Currently the host preference of L. ludwigi for L. g. hexapetalaand L. peploides is under study. Two new subspecies of L. peploides were found and described.
