Descripción:
Chubut Steamerduck (Tachyeres leucocephalus) is a flightless anatid endemic of the Central Patagonia marine coast, Argentina, classified as Near Threatened by IUCN due to the small population size. The existing ecological information on this species is extremely limited, anecdotic and fragmentary. The distribution of this kind of marine duck is restricted and non uniform, where high concentration of the individuals occurs at northern San Jorge Gulf. Almost all nests were located on small and medium sized islands and islets. Nesting areas were located within sheltered bays and inlets with shallow waters and close to the coastline, no nests farther than 200 meters from the high tide line. Picture: Pablo Galesi Most nests were found in vegetated habitats under bushes. Vegetation cover seems to be a key component of nesting habitat for the Steamerducks, with an average cover around the nest of 64%.
