Resumen:
GEOSUR started in 2004 as an initiative of argentinian and Italian geoscientists working in the southern world. GEOSUR 2007 has expanded to attract the south American and European scientific communities to present and discuss about the results of their research in the southern hemisphere. We believe GEOSUR is following the route of discovery and collaboration that opened some centuries ago. The first dhescription of the geological features of Chile and the South America region was from Juan Ignacio Molina, a chilean Jesuit abbot, exiled in Italy, that in 1782 published in Bologna “Saggio sulla storia naturale del Chili”. The new concepts on the geology developed during this period contributed to the understanding of the earth phenomena of South America, which subsequently led to a new vision of nature, through the work of Charles Darwin and other scientists. Today the geology of the Southern hemisphere, including Antarctica, contributes significantly to the progress of the Earth Sciences seen as an integrated knowledge of the Earth system, where man plays an important role. The 180 abstracts of this volume include all the contributions collected at theweb site www.geosur.org and represent a success for the meeting. An important qualitative and quantitative contribution to the congress derives from young scientists. The subjects of these contributions cover different fields of the Earth Sciences from geodynamics to paleoclimatology through the classical petrology, sedimentology, and ore deposits, with important focus on the social relationship of the geologic knowledge, through the seismic hazards and volcanic risk. Finally we wish to thank all the Authors for their prompt replies and excellentdisposition to collaborate with the Editors, which made the work fast and easy. If the minor changes introduced in some abstracts modified the intended meaning of the sentence, it is the editor’s responsibility. During the two month stay of FH as invited professor at Université Paul Cézanne (Aix-Marseille III), the Editors met in July at Aubagne, France and in September at Gubbio and Urbino, Italy to improve the congress organization. The Local Scientific, Organizing and Field Trips Committees are credited for their hard work in the organization of the sessions in Santiago, the field trips, and the printing of this volume and the field guides. Madrass is thanked for producing the posters of GEOSUR 2007. The photograph by Mauricio Calderón in the cover of the Abstracts volume corresponds to metacherts of the Sarmiento ophiolitic complex.
