We investigate a possible correlation between the muon decit in simulations whencompared to data and the shortfall of extreme-energy inclined events. We assumethat the observed enhancement of strangeness production in high energy hadroniccollisions is at the core of the muon anomaly and analyze the concomitant $ Kswap impact on the development of cosmic ray showers. We show that the muonanomaly, which camouages an underestimate of the invisible energy of the shower, isstrongly correlated with the reconstructed energy of inclined events. We argue thatan underestimate of the cosmic ray primary energy leads to a decit of inclined eventsat the high-energy end of the spectrum.
