Resumen:
Arsenic has been an issue of concern in last decades because of the serious incidence of the element on the human health arising from the ingestion of water with small amounts of arsenic for prolonged periods. Contamination by arsenic is a serious public health problem at global level in our planet, due to the carcinogenic and neurotoxic power of the element. Around 100 million people are at risk in Asia and 14 million people are potentially affected in Latin America, with high impact in Argentina. Arsenic intoxication in Argentina was first mentioned in the medical literature in 1913 by Dr. Goyenechea, followed by Dr. Ayerza, who related some clinical manifestations in patients in the locality of Bell Ville (Province of Córdoba) to the consumption of groundwater with high concentrations of arsenic. Since 2006, four events of the International Congress on ?Arsenic in the Environment? were held in different countries (Mexico 2006, Spain 2008, Taiwan 2010 and Australia 2012). A wide range of topics related to the problem of arsenic have been addressed, ranging from geological distribution, health effects, advances in analytical measurements and methods for removal and mitigation of pollution by arsenic and its chemical species. The four editions of the Congress counted with the attendance of researchers and professionals from many countries worldwide, especially the most affected by the problem. Prominent speakers made very important contributions to the advance of the knowledge on the arsenic state of art. In the 4th International Congress of Arsenic in the Environment, carried out in Australia in May 2012, Argentina has been proposed and elected to host the following Congress in 2014. For this reason, the organization of the 5th International Congress in the Latin American region is considered relevant, with the title ?As2014, One Century of the Discovery of Arsenicosis in America (1914-2014)?. This new edition of the Congress intends to invite and integrate researchers of a wide age range, involved in different study areas in an open forum, with the aim to strengthen relations between academia, industry, research laboratories, government agencies and the private sector. An optimal atmosphere will allow sharing the interchange of knowledge, discoveries and discussions about the problem of arsenic in the environment. Therefore, and without doubts, the organization of As2014 en Buenos Aires will have relevant positive global consequences. The session topics of As2014 comprise the following themes: 1: Arsenic in environmental matrices (air, water and soil) 2: Arsenic in food 3: Arsenic and health 4: Removal Technologies 5: Mitigation Management and Policy
