Resumen:
GEC (Grupo de Estudio del Cuaternario, South America) has prepared this volume as a main result of the INQUA Project: Quaternary and Present Climatesof the Parana and Uruguay Basins, SE South America (1999-2003). It collects selected contributions of GEC members discussed in our international workshops, together with invited papers. The great De la Plata River basin (3,100,000 km2) is formed by the Parana and Uruguay basins. It is largely a Quaternary system, because it was shaped by orogenic and epirogenic movements that occurred in Pliocene times. The broad pattern of the basin is formed by the mobile Andean belt in the west, Mesozoic-Paleozoic rocks in the north and east, and Quaternary sediments in the central and southern lowlands. In short, the Editors hope that this volume can be useful as a basis for more detailed investigations in the region. It also can be interesting for colleagues who are curious about the main pattern of the Quaternary of South America.
