Resumen:
The only way to explore climate system dynamics beyond instrumental records is to study natural archives such as lacustrine (Zolitschka, 2003) and marine sediments (von Dobeneck and Schmieder, 1999), ice cores, tree rings and corals. Especially lake sediments are widely used as high-resolution natural archives of past environmental and climatic conditions as well as of paleomagnetic variations on local, regional and global scales. They have demonstrated to be reliable recorders of the past geomagnetic field. Moreover, it is well known that rock magnetic properties of sedimentary sequences can be correlated with past climatic changes (Maher and Thompson, 1999; Stockhausen & Zolitschka, 1999; Sagnotti et al., 2001; Shouyun et al., 2002; Demory et al., 2005; Rousse et al., 2006). In the framework of this study we plan to develop geomagnetic secular variation curves from Laguna Potrok Aike (southern Patagonia, Argentina) as a high-resolution stratigraphic correlation tool to be applied to lacustrine sediments from South America and marine sediments from the southern oceans. Furthermore, we will develop a model to explain how climatic forcing is transferred through the environment of the catchment area to the lake and recorded in its sedimentary magnetic parameters.
