Previouly, we demonstrated that commercial probiotic fermented milk-(cPFM) was able to control IgE production in ovoalbumin (OVA) sensitized mice. The aim of this work was to evaluate the regulatory capacity of two probiotic strains in an experimental airway allergy model. Lactobacillus casei CRL431 (CRL431S) and Lactobacillus paracasei ssp. paracasei CNCMI-1518 (1518S), were administered separately in the drinking water (1x108 CFU/ml) or as fermented milk (CRL431-FM or 1518-FM) (1x108 CFU/ml) to adult BALB/c mice 7 days (Basal-B) prior to OVA airway sensitization. Mice were divided into: previous treatment-PT (only 7-days with probiotic) and continuous treatment-CT (treated until the end of the experience). 7-days after sensitization, treated mice and sensitization controls (SC) were sacrificed to measure anti-OVA-(a-OVA)-IgE and IgG in serum and IL-4, IL-10 and IFN-γ in macerated lungs. Basal and normal control samples (B-NC) were obtained before sensitization; milk-drinking control was also studied. From all different treatments analyzed 1518S and CRL431-FM showed higher reduction of a-OVA-IgE level in CT. All treatments (milk* suspensions* and FM?s*) increased a-OVA-IgG in PT and CT. In lungs we found that IL-4 was increased in basal samples (*) and PT and CT with CRL431S and FM. IL-10, regulatory cytokine, decreased in all treated mice compared to NC and B. IFN-γ (Th1) was increased in CT with 1518S and CRL431-FM and PT with CRL431S. 1518S and CRL431-FM had a regulatory effect. However, the effectiveness was limited compared to cPFMs in which probiotics are included, showing the importance of the fermentation process in the regulation of IgE production.
