Resumen:
An assessment of Francis I?s papacy, Jorge Bergoglio (1936- ), implies analyzing highly current historical aspects. His well known support of the Peronist movement from the late sixties to the following decade is always mentioned. This article briefly considers some academic work on Bergoglio, and summarizes the first five years of his papacy (March 2013- March 2018). It then analyzes religious and political reactions to Francis in part of the central countries? policies and public opinion. This approach may provide clues and possible answers regarding his alleged populism. To conclude, and closely linked with the latter, the problem of populism on the political scene is examined.
