Resumen:
We present a model for the Rhizobium-legume symbiosis, considering two rhizobial strains differing in their ability to fix N2 for the plant. We explore the case of sanctions applied by the plant to ineffective rhizobia, and address other factors relevant to rhizobia-legume mutualism. Our model predicts a critical a fraction of fixing rhizobia in soil. We also show that coexistence between fixing and non-fixing strains is possible, without incorporating sanctions towards non-fixing rhizobia.
