Resumen:
The aim of this work was to select the most suitable macrophyte species and substrate using horizontal subsurfaceflow (HSSF) wetlands for the effluent treatment from a local cheese factory. A first-order model was applied to quantify theinfluence of plant species and substrates. Microcosms-scale HSSF wetlands were planted with Canna glauca or Typhadomingensis. LECA and river stone were used as substrates. The fitted parameters of the modified first-order model k-C*allowed to demonstrate the effect of the plants in the treatment of the effluent. HSSF wetlands planted with C. glauca reached the lowest background concentration C* of TIN using both LECA and river stone. HSSF wetlands using river stones WEREfaster than HSSF wetlands using LECA as substrate.
