The aim was to get a better insight into the ability of Ciliochorella buxifolia to grow and to produce extracellular enzyme activity on a) an agar medium supplemented separately with several simple and polymeric compounds as sole C source, b) a range of concentration of tannic acid and c) a liquid medium in presence of a water-soluble fraction of Scutia buxifolia leaf-litter and several chemical agents related to different roles of the oxidative enzymes in fungal processes. The results demonstrate the ability of this strain to a) grow on a wide range of simple and polymeric compounds, being tannic acid medium which revealed higher growth, b) oxidize tannic acid on agar medium and tolerate polyphenol concentrations of less than 0.5% and c) produce extracellular laccase enzymatic activity, reporting increases in activity in liquid media supplemented with water-soluble fraction of leaf-litter and Cu +2. These results suggest a close relationship between the metabolic capacity of the fungus to degrade and grow on these substrates, as well as a possible primary role as a colonizer.
