Resumen:
Dechidroleucodine (DhL) is the active principie of Aretemisia douglasiana Besser, a plant that is used in folk mcdicinc as a citoprotective agent to prevent peptic uI1cer. DhL prevents the formation of gastric lesions induced by the exposure of the rats to absolute ethanol orally administrated. The aim of this work was to evaluate the protector effect of DhL, and the prevention of the oxidalive stress caused by ethanol administration. Markers of oxidative stress were evaluated: 1) in vivo chemiluminiscence of stomach of rats (CL). 2) antioxidant enzyymes: superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (cat) and 3) Total antioxidant Capacity of homogenales of the tissue (TRAP). Cl of rats treated with ethanol increased by 118% when compared with the control group. The previous administration DhL suspension (40 mg/Kg wt), decreased the light emission by 34 %, increased SOD activity by l6%, decreased Cat activity by 70 % and caused an increment of 50 % in TRAP vallues as compared to ethanol of treated rats (0.56 ± 0.07 U/mg, 1.79 ± 0.45 pmol/mg.;l and 159 ± 39 p M Trotox respectively for ethanol group). These results would indicate that DhL is able to trap oxygen free radicals buI it is not an efficient antioxidant.
